• How I got published: 15 tips on how to get your comics out there

First video about making comics that I've done. Planing on making more of these instructional / tips videos for all you aspiring comic / manga artists out there! Please help me spread and link these videos so that other artists in need of the information can get it. Short about me: I'm a comic artist and a teacher at Serieskolan (the Comic Art School) in Malmö, Sweden. There I teach both about the comic making process and about the industry, things like how to get jobs and make a portfolio. Website for the school: http://serieskolan.kvarnby.fhsk.se/ Since the classes are for the students only, I though I could do some videos about this so other artists out there could get some help too. A very, very general overview on how to get going with comic publishing. This was done in mind for those who live in the Detroit area. You have everything within reach to get out there and be the local publisher of tomorrow! You can get the Canson Fanboy manga board from your local Utrecht/Blick art store! Check the store by WSU, they keep them in stock and can reorder if they sell out. Next time, I'll talk about general budgeting, materials for drawing, panels for squishing a story in 16 pages, and beginning aspects of book design (for printing or Amazon). I'd also like to talk about Kickstarter/fundraisers and how those can factor in with regular productions (and sometimes make your operations easier). Links! http://www.grekoprinting.com/ http://gumroad.com http://manga.smithmicro.com/trial.html Remember to ALWAYS keep costs low! A low overhead will save your business and make others wonder, "How did they do that?" It's easier than you think! Don't worry about if the market is saturated. It will ALWAYS be saturated. Simply tell your story. Don't worry about someone who says what you do is a waste of time or is immature, either. You tell them, you're inspiring their children to embrace literacy. Last I checked, that was a good thing. I'll talk more next time! I hope this inspires someone! Thank you and I'm sorry for the computer screen! It didn't like the glass cleaner I gave it, I guess.

Pipeline We’ll examine different ways a production can work, including planning our book with publishing in mind, how to mix traditional and digital media and how to work in a team vs. Solo. Story An overview of writing a story with the graphic novel format in mind. Characters, setting, story structure, script writing, and writing with drawing. Drawing Traditionally / Digitally Once we’re ready to get dirty, we’ll learn how to actually draw our pages, setting up a page, penciling, inking and coloring it, in both digital and traditional forms. Publishing Before wrapping up we’ll talk about getting a publisher, or how to self publish the book yourself. We’ll cover printing options, book design, distribution options and marketing strategy. How much will it cost? The course will launch at $97 for the first 3 days, and then the price will go up to $147 and will never drop again. You know the drill. It will also be available as part of our Ultimate Package, which includes our entire course library, so if you already purchased that package you will get access to the course on launch day. Don't miss this one! After taking this course you will have complete understanding of the entire process of creating a graphic novel from start to finish, and will be able to take the next steps to making your book a reality. So. Many. Mistakes. I kind of wish I could go back in time and do my first book over again. But I can't. So instead I wrote another book. And messed that one up a bit. And wrote a third book (that I haven't managed to screw up yet, so good for me). I'm going to do monthly "Everything you need to know about self-publishing!!!" videos. Feel free to get in touch at booksandquills@gmail.com // f a q Can you review my book? I’m always happy to hear about upcoming books, but I’m afraid I don’t review self-published books and can only accept a small number of books for review. I enjoy reading classics, dystopian/apocalyptic novels, sci-fi, translated fiction and a variety of graphic novels, YA and contemporary literary fiction. Get in touch at booksandquills@gmail.com Where is your accent from? I was born and raised in the Netherlands, studied English Lit at Leiden University (also in the Netherlands), studied in the US for 3 months and have lots of American friends. I'm definitely not Irish or Canadian, I promise! Where do you live? I live in London and have been here for 4 years now. How did you get into publishing? I did publishing work experience, did a lot of networking and learned everything I know about social media from creating and running this channel. (P.s. You don't necessarily have to study Publishing or English to get a job in publishing!).
